  1. Phonetics, Linguisticsa phoneme that is defined or determined by its contrast in sound with other phonemes, without reference to its role in morphology or any other level of linguistic analysis beyond the phonetic level. Also called taxonomic phoneme. Cf. systematic phoneme.
